The faculty started in 1980, the year when Volgograd State University was founded.
Three major specialties were the first to appear: English, German and French Philology Chairs functioned within the Natural Science and Humanities Faculty.
In 1983-1989 they formed a separate Faculty of Romance and Germanic Languages, which then functioned as Linguistics Department of Philology Faculty throughout 1990-1998.
In 1999 this Department was set apart as a separate Faculty and then became the Faculty of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication with three major languages.
