A DREAM HOUSE
Englishmen say their homes are their castles. Many of us would agree with them, no matter
whether we have a rich mansion in a residential area or just a little flat in a housing
estate, for your home is your own private territory where you are a sort of a king: you
can do whatever you want and no stranger can disturb or hurt you. That's why the
decoration of your house is so important in making you comfortable - a wrong decoration that doesn't fit you can break the whole feeling
of ownership and make you a stranger in your own house. As they say tastes differ and
someone prefers to see extra modern style and someone tends to something classical,
reminding of prosperity and luxury of the 18 & 19 centuries.
As for me, I prefer just classical style as it gives a sense of solidity and constancy,
has strong connections with history and good quality furnishings. That's why I would like
my dream house to be traditionally planned and to have classic interiors. |
The showpiece of my dream house
would be my reception room where all the features of the classic style would find their
legitimate place. Warm mahogany, rust, aubergine and brown colors prevail in the room,
matching the stripped timber flooring and beige walls. The focal point of the room is
certainly the traditional fireplace, decorated with wooden panels. On the mantelpiece
there are some, antiques, tribal artifacts or family photos in austere wooden
print-holders. A comfy sofa and armchairs, arranged near the fireplace, are strewed with
leaf-printed cushions, matching the upholstery. In front of the sofa stands an antique
round coffee table of polished wood with ornate candlesticks on it. The room is full of
different objects, pictures and photos, making it look cosy and homelike.
Another room of a great importance in my house would be a library, which would also be a
study for me. As I'm really fond of reading, the main role here belongs to books, hundreds
of which stand in huge full-length walnut bookcases. There is certainly a place for
pictures of old masters in gorgeous golden frames, gravures and different antiques. In the
corner stands an old-fashioned ponderous desk with twisted legs and a posh leather
armchair with intorted carven arms. On the desk stand expensive writing sets, a blotting
case, a desk pad and some photos. The room is very quiet; nothing distracts you from your
work. Hosts of books give you a touch of placidity, make you feel like working and inspire
you to create. In the middle of the room there is an exquisite leather chaise long to ease
off with a book for a couple of minutes during the working day.
Unlike the study, the bedroom in my dream house contains few books, ones that I'm reading
at the moment. The room is also rid of a TV set, not to disturb your rest; but there is a
stereo to listen to classical music for relaxation before going to bed. The colorings and
the upholster are light and warm, giving a sense of freedom and carelessness. The focal
point is the huge comfortable bed occupying the greater part of the room. On the both
sides from it stand small bedside tables with cream-shaded lamps on them and vases with
fresh flowers. In the corner there is a dressing table with lots of toiletry on it. A
small morning- room abuts on the bedroom. Its front wall is completely occupied by an
enormous French window overlooking the garden. There are no curtains on the window and the
room is always sunlit. The furniture matches those of the bedroom and has the same
relaxing feeling. It consists of a comfy slub-silked armchair with some cushions on it and
a small breakfast table with two chairs. In the corner
stands a beautiful green tree, reflecting sunbeams on it leaves and reminding you of the
tender spring on cold bright winter mornings. It is a perfect place for meditating,
reading and having an unhasting relaxing breakfast in a soft dressing gown on your weekend
with nothing to worry about.
These are the most important rooms for me, places where I would spend a bigger part of my
time at home. But of course there is also a dining room with damasks and a children
room with duck egg blue and pale pink. Every room in my house has its own individuality
and reflects the nature of its owner, its basic function - to relax and make you feel the
serenity of mind. The whole decoration and furniture of the house doesn't depend on the
latest fashion, it is associated with earth and nature and has warm colours with depth and
substance. It's a real castle, an island of placidity in the tumultuous ocean of life. |
