«Образовывать общество интеллектуально, а не морально, все равно, что образовывать угрозу обществу». Это высказывание Теодора Рузвельта как нельзя лучше подходит в качестве эпиграфа к данному материалу.
В рамках международной программы «Характер для детей» в середине декабря на нашем факультете прошел семинар. Им руководил «преподаватель характера» из США Дэвид Парсли. Пусть вас не удивляет словосочетание, заключенное в кавычки, по-английски оно звучит как «Character trainer». На семинаре речь шла о том, как помочь формированию основных качеств и ценностей личности.
Три дня проходили занятия на английском языке, которые посетили студенты групп Ас-031, Ас-041, АН-042, АН-043.
Как участники, так и сам преподаватель, остались очень довольны семинаром, а большое число жизненных примеров, непринужденная манера преподавания и юмор, использование современного оборудования помогли усвоить довольно серьезную информацию.
Мы услышали о том, как важно уделять внимание воспитанию черт характера в детях, таких как честность, надежность, уважение ответственность, мужественность, справедливость и надежду. Воспитание детей в этой области поможет сформировать в них основные стержневые качества сильного характера, а так же, подчеркнул Дэвид, очень важно то, чтобы учитель сам жил ценностями, которые хочет развивать в своих учениках.
Дэвид показал, как можно преподносить этот материал, через новые и интересные методы, приемы и сценарии раскрыл основные ценности личностных качеств. Мы смогли почувствовать себя детьми, когда, например, играли с воздушными шариками сначала каждый сам с собой, потом все вместе, или когда Дэвид, угощал конфетами лишь некоторых из нас (потом, правда, каждый получил свою конфету). И мы поняли, как действуют на учеников педагогические приемы учителей, как дети чувствуют, что вместе играть веселее и как они ощущают, что есть справедливость, а что — нет. За чаем, устроенным в перерыве между занятиями, можно было обсудить волнующие каждого вопросы из личной жизни или практики работы с детьми, просто передохнуть, либо поговорить с Дэвидом о семинаре поподробнее (интервью приведено ниже на английском языке).
А еще, что немаловажно, во время занятий мы полностью погрузились в атмосферу изучаемого языка. Наши студентки признались, что, несмотря на то, что преподаваемый материал затрагивал глубокие концепты, они воспринимали его без трудностей. В заключительный день занятий мы получили сертификаты и сфотографировались на память. Надеемся, что такие семинары будут иметь место и дальше на нашем факультете.
А теперь представляем вашему вниманию интервью с Дэвидом Парсли на английском языке, взятое участницей семинара Мариной Зеленской (гр.Ас-041).
M: David,are these seminars taught only in Russia?
D: The basic seminar has been taught in Russia, Barnaul (Ukraine). We also teach it in the Ukraine, Romania, Estonia; they start in Germany I think this fall.
M: And what about America?
D: No, “Character International” only works in Russia and Eastern Europe.
M: Can you see the results of the program? Can you see the difference in the character of the kids?
D: No, we’re not teaching for immediate result, this will take two generations. This is an investment in the children today and hopefully when they grow up and take their position they will take the direction in the society and will make better decisions. This in not what you can change in one generation.
M: Should we take into account the difference of the cultures when teaching the seminar?
D: Character is a basic human value and you find it in all societies, even in very primitive societies they have character values. They have at least the fundamental values that we have been talking about. Now how we apply them in different cultures it depends on where they are in their development of the culture. It’s difficult in some countries to see the immediate result, some countries corruption is so bad, and they’re not going to change some present administration. We can’t even do it in America; we have corrupt politicians in America as in most countries. What we’re hoping to do that the children of today be the leaders in the future.
M: I wonder if there are any problems in teaching teachers? Do you have problems during the seminars?
D: No, I find that this is very well received, because I think that teachers are always looking for new and fresh ways to teach and what we are trying to do, we’re not teaching character values, because you already have these values, what we’re doing is teaching the awareness of techniques and some interesting scenarios to corporate this into basic curriculum.
We are here to stimulate the idea; we know that these young teachers are every creative and if we give them stimulation and few tips they will take more of this then we could do. So we just to get this started. We can’t teach this to all the children, that’s why we teach the teachers and these teachers will have many, many hundreds of children who many hundreds.
M:Can the teachers add anything new to this program use their examples and activity?
D: They have to get on their own creativity and they have to find new and interesting ways to teach and we all will see what happens in five years. We get to go and observe the student-teachers and see how they apply it. Course it’s very interesting to see the activity they come up with and how they interact with their students and this is before they’ve become teachers. And then we actually do seminars teacher’s classes and see how they continue with it, because they do so much more then we imagine. We’re just working on basics, but when you turn this with very inventive teachers there are no limits with what you can do with this.
M: Did you enjoy teaching this seminar?
D: Yes, I find it’s very alert and very interesting group. Nobody slept in the class.
I teach seminars at nights at some other institutions and you can tell that the students are tired and some of them are taking this for credit… See!? They don’t get credit for this; they are here because they want to learn some new and interesting concepts. When I find this in the audience, it’s very interesting for me to teach that kind of group cause I get a lot of energy out of this.
M: Thank you for the seminar David.
D: Well, I hope that you’ll take the things. I take great pleasure knowing that I’ve made difference in one person’s life under the things I’ve said and taught. And as a teacher you’re not going to change every student you ever teach, but hopefully you could have an influence on them and someday they will make a good choice and will make a good decision and that’s why you do this. You don’t do it for money, you don’t do this for the parent’s recognition you do this because you know you’ll make a difference in the future.
M: Can you give a slogan for the future teachers.
D: Well, we say, Character is who we are. You can not teach some things you don’t like yourself, because you have to believe it. You have to be a person of a good character to teach people character. You are the role model and students will see it. You have to be real and believe it yourself. Thank you.
